Office Hours, Monday, 3/23

Tyler frowned at the empty Word document in which he was trying to type a lecture for Friday. It turned out even if you only wanted to talk about Pearl Harbor and Hiroshima, World War II was much, much too big to cover in one class.

He wondered if he could cheat and make the class watch a movie again. He was sure there was some Bruckheimer film out there...

The office door was open and he was rather desperately hoping for distraction.

Striding on in with a cup of coffee, Tony saw nothing wrong with taking one of the moddedlikewhoa chairs for his own. "Tyler."

"Tony," Tyler returned gratefully as he glanced away from the computer screen. "Your dad worked on Manhattan project, right?"

"Well. Yes." Tony took a sip of his coffee. "Why?"

"We're finally on World War II for class," Tyler explained. "I'm trying to figure out how to fit that stack of books" -- he nodded to a pile overtaking one of the other chairs -- "into a class period. I think it's cheating to show two movies in a row."

Teaching advice. Yeeeah.

"You could always make them pick a topic to do a report on. Then they'll be the ones teaching their classmates."

Teaching advice was probably the less disturbing option, here.

"Send everybody down to the library?" Tyler asked. "Maybe. Last student presentation we assigned ended up being about how bad the hair on Mount Rushmore was."

Tony just raised an eyebrow over that. "That's why you shouldn't teach."

Among other reasons.

Tyler looked decidedly skeptical. "I shouldn't teach because Ino Yamanaka has an interesting idea about what to include in an oral report. Thanks. That's helpful."

"Tyler, you're asking me for teaching advice," Tony pointed out, not unkindly.

Tyler took a second, but he laughed at himself. "I am. And that is why I should probably take part of the summer off and not try to teach."

"Did you need a job?"

Oh, Tony. Bad idea.

Excruciatingly bad idea. Tyler sipped coffee to keep himself from saying something undiplomatic.

"Yes to the question you actually asked," he said carefully. "No to what you meant. I have a couple ideas that do not involve Stark Industries. Or I'll sell soap again."

Steve knocked on Tyler's door frame and said, "I felt it was only fair to give you advance notice I'm going to kill Tony."

".... what did he do this time?"

Class wasn't the first thing to enter Tyler's mind. It had been a week, after all.

"He assigned my class an essay on...kink," Steve said, like he had trouble even saying the word. "Which they were to research on the internet. And then hand in to me." He paused for a moment, then said in a strangled voice, "Jamie Madrox wants me to reimburse him for viewing porn."

Tyler gave Steve a blank look for a second, disbelieving.

Then he buried his face against his palms, which a)was what he wanted to do anyhow and b)did an effective job of hiding his smirk until he was recovered enough to talk without laughing.

"He forgot to mention the essay part, but he told me the fetish thing," he said. "I said you'd kill him. Is Madrox's report illustrated?"

That was an important detail, there.

"I haven't looked at it yet," Steve admitted, then said in a bleak voice, "It's on shield fetishes."

He didn't realize Tyler might not get why that was so horrifying to Steve.

Shield fetishes was plenty bizarre without knowing about Steve's specific personal problems with the concept. "Leave it to Jamie to find something weirder than amputee porn."

Steve continued to look completely horrified. "Sometimes I really miss the forties."

"Forties as in nineteen?" Tyler asked, glancing at his stack of WWII books out of the corner of his eye. That was .... interesting information to have right now.

He leaned back in his chair. "I could try to talk to Tony, but .." he gave a shrug indicating that he didn't think Tony would listen.

"Yeah," Steve agreed. "Tony seems to be Tony no matter what universe he's from." Then he followed Tyler's line of sight to the books and said, with great interest, "Oh, are you teaching the War?"

"And there's no version of him who wouldn't think teaching about fetishes was a charitable act," Tyler nodded. "And yeah. Trying to figure out how to fit it into a class period. It's not easy."

He took a chance. "You got, uh, a personal interest?"

"I can see how that would be hard." Then Steve said simply, "I was in it."

"I'm sure Pepper would love to have you around," Tony pointed out. As it was clearly Pepper he was doing this for.

"In it," Tyler echoed, because of course nothing was ever simple here. He turned to face Steve fully. "Didn't know that. Where did you serve?"
