Moving cross-island via rickshaw, Tyler quickly learned, fucking sucked. His futon barely fit in the back of one and as for the number of trips he had to make ... well. Let's just say he was glad he had a philosophical objection to material possession.

Though, for a guy with a philosophical objection to material possessions, he sure had a bunch of stuff. He filled what he hoped was a last box with kitchen items (pots, pasta, the good coffee) and sat at the table to write a quick note before officially moving out.

Murdock & Miss Bennet -

My address after today is 13 Griffin Way. Nothing personal, just need a little more space.

Murdock, the official papers are in the manila folder right under this note. Use your landlord powers for good.

I hate giving up the Apocalypse address, but all good things come to an end.

Later -

T. Durden

Tyler sighed as he added his keys to the stack of papers on the table. He'd make one last check of the bathroom, and then he'd be gone.

Murdock finally made back to the house after their morning excursion.

"Can I have candy now?" Houston was pestering him.

"No. Good grief no," Murdock replied. "Hey Tyler. How's it goin'?"

"Hi, hi, hi!" Houston grinned at him.

"Believe it or not, it's Houston. My dog. He woke up like that yesterday."

"Allo mate!" Houston greeted.

"He's still very much himself, looks not included," Murdock explained.

"Food now?" Houston asked.

"See what I mean?"

He smirked at Houston and nodded absently, "Sure."

Two seconds later, Tyler's words actually got through to his brain.

"What?"

"Are you serious? I mean, you don't wanna keep it?"

He took the folder, glanced at the note and twirled the key ring on a finger.

"Huh. I reckon I could. Why not just sell it though?"

"Oh. I appreciate that."

"I'll do it." He grinned a bit. "And I swear I'll use my landlord powers only for good and justice."

"You were never really in my hair, dude," he grinned. "Somehow, we managed to not cross paths too often. Kinda weird."

Miss Bennet heard the ruckus, and found her way up to the main floor of the house, glancing about with some manner of confusion.

"Is everything all right?" she asked. "You're ... leaving? Surely you won't be going without finishing your class."

Miss Bennet had yet to spy the note.

"Oh, I see," she said, somewhat reassured. "I was concerned that perhaps this island's oddities had driven you away at last. Not that I could have blamed you, on that point."

She hesitated. "Has someone purchased the house from you?"

"How very strange," she frowned, glancing it over. "It should be no trouble. I imagine he'll do admirably as landlord, in your stead." She bit her lip, weighing something before shaking her head. "I'm ... certain that there will be new tenants in no time at all. This town ... has plenty of residents who need homes."

"No, of course not," she said quickly, giving him a weak smile. "I do hope you have a lovely time. For myself, I ... expect you should laugh if you knew what I was thinking. It is perhaps silly to concern myself with propriety, when I have lived on this island long enough to know that ... such things are viewed differently, here."

"Society has never bothered much with logic," she sighed. "Living here at all is scandalous, and shocking, but it looks as though I am simply flouting convention. Unforgivable, terrible, but not nearly so bad as ..."

She searched for words. "Were I living here, alone, with an unmarried man, the implication would not be that I was daring or shocking. It would be that I were ... that we had ... an arrangement."

She could not say the word mistress.

"I suspect you would know, if you did," she smiled gently. "Such things aren't subtle, from what I understand of them."

Eliza's cheeks were pink, but she nodded. "Perhaps the arrangement flows the other direction?"

"I was teasing, as well," she admitted. "See how cultured I've become? I can refer to such things in an offhand manner. I don't believe I have met anyone of that name, no. Does she teach?"

Elizabeth had to consider that for a few seconds.

"No," she said finally. "In that case, I can say that I certainly haven't met her."

"Do you know when it is that she works?" Eliza asked. "I will be fine, I thank you. I may have to further explore my options, though I should hate for the new landlord to lose his only tenant so quickly."

"This just means I shall have to get out more," Eliza decided. "My sister very strictly informed me that I lacked proper socialization, and Jane is never wrong about such things."

"I sit in my room, I read books, I am a horrible wallflower," she confessed, eyes twinkling. "I've only been to one ball all term, and a wedding at which I wore something completely unspeakable. I shall go back to Longbourn and discover I've forgotten how to make small talk at all."
