Contrary to Tyler's fears, Steve Rogers' idea of a vacation did not turn out to involve helping old ladies across the street or cooking in a soup kitchen. Instead, they had taken their flying(!) Porsche(!!) to a very nice Bed and Breakfast near the Maine coast -- the kind of place with pillows you wanted to just curl up and live on and fresh local strawberries on the waffles at breakfast.

But they were not enjoying it right now. No, instead, someone had the brilliant idea to go fishing. In theory Tyler was all for the hunt-to-survive primitive stuff, but, after three hours of absolutely nothing happening, he was starting to decide mankind had given up on huter-gatherer lifestyle because it was boring.

"Y'know, I bet we can buy trout for, like, $6 a pound at the Safeway in town."

"And frogs and snails as well. Not to mention whatever insects might be swimming around in there. Leeches..." Nathan was absolutely doing this on purpose now, yes. "That's one hell of a gumbo."

He blew some splinters off of the end of his makeshift spear, and then shut the knife and tossed it back toward Tyler.

"Well, they'd certainly be..." He fumbled for the right word. "... Meaty."

That would do.

He gave his head another shake for good measure, and then used the stick as leverage to get himself back to his feet.

"Never better," Nathan lied. Because he was just that damn stubborn. "I'm perfectly fine, so long as I don't sink into the mud."

If that happened, he'd very humbly ask that they bury his body under a cherry tree. Because there was no bloody way he was going to ask for help getting out again.

"I'll make a point of it, then." He leaned back against a tree just long enough to step out of his shoes, and then he carefully picked his way across the shore and into the water, stopping when he was just shy of his knees.

"And now I wait for a fish."

Because they hadn't been doing enough of that already. Honestly, now.

"I'll drop it in your lap," Nathan promised. Because he was just that cocky. Really, now.

His toes were going to be wrinkled by the time he actually caught something.

...

...

"There aren't near as many fish in these lakes as there were back when, are there?"

"Well, that's wholly reassuring," he noted, "considering we're planning on eating them."

He was staying put, damn it. He'd stand there at least until he saw a fish, if he had to.

... Oh, that made Nathan's head hurt.

"Please tell me you're exaggerating. Just a little. So that I don't feel it absolutely necessary to take up farming."

"... That's sound enough logic," Nathan finally settled on.

He was going to start breaking up the ground in the backyard the instant his injuries healed, so that he could plant his own damn food in the spring, yes.

He gave his head a shake, and then returned his attention to the water. The water where, by some miracle, a flash of movement caught Nathan's eye, and he thrust the spear downward toward it.

He only looked a little smug as he pulled the stick out of the water, a dying trout skewered on the end of it, yes. Really. Just a tiny bit.

Nathan might have given a small bow, right then. It was difficult to tell, really, because the bow was just that small. As it stood, he was going to lob his makeshift spear, fish and all, back toward the shore before working on slogging his way out of the water again.

His time spent in Japan had certainly done wonders for his focus, but he'd always been a good aim before. Good combination for him. Bad combination for the fish.

"It isn't all that difficult, really. You just have to account for the water skewing your perception some."

Nathan nodded faintly.

"No more fishing like a lady for you, hm?"

"There's a first for everything, I suppose." Nathan chuckled, and then nodded to his stick. "You can use that one, if you'd like."
